03 Apr 09 -- The 9th edition of the prestigious Miss Philippines Earth 2009 coronation night will be held on May 10, 2009 at the San Juan Arena in San Juan City, as announced by Carousel Productions, the organizer of Miss Earth and Miss Philippines Earth pageants. The pageant this year will be having 50 delegates to represent various cities and selected Filipino communities abroad.

The outgoing Miss Philippines Earth 2008 titleholder, who is also the reigning Miss Earth 2008, Karla Henry will crown her successor in the event. The winner of Miss Philippines Earth 2009 will represent the Philippines in the Miss Earth 2009 beauty pageant in October of 2009.
In 2006, Carousel Productions opened the contest to Filipina women of foreign ancestry, or from those living abroad. In 2008, Miss Philippines-Earth broadened its coverage to various provinces, cities, and municipalities to send in their respective candidates. The decision to transform Miss Philippines in a larger-scale was made to further the advocacy of Miss Philippines Earth and to be able to reach the farthest and smallest towns in the Philippines and likewise in various Filipino communities abroad. The candidates and winners actively promote and get involved in the preservation of the environment and in the protection of Mother Earth.
The nationwide selection and participation of Filipino communities abroad has received mixed-reactions among pageant enthusiasts. Nevertheless, Carousel productions certainly has proven that Miss Earth is not a just a beauty pageant, but “beauty with a cause pageant” in its effort to expand its environmental awareness campaign.
The pageant promotes the liberal conception more than any other pageant. It places credence on the intellectual capacities of a candidate, by choosing the winner based primarily on her ability to be an effectual ambassadress of the earth, her attitude, and on her natural beauty. Take into account that In the Pre-Judging session, the delegates face a panel of judges in their simplest look (without make-up).
It is also interesting to note that some of the Miss Philippines Earth 2009 delegates already participated in 2 pre-pageant activities that gained world-records. On March 21, 2009, 12 of the official candidates of Miss Philippines Earth 2009 participated in the Grand March versus Illegal Drugs. The event was recorded in the Guinness World Records as the “Largest March Against Illegal Drugs.”

On March 28, 2009, 11 of the official candidates of Miss Philippines 2009 along with 2 reigning Miss Philippines winners, Miss Philippines Air Marie Razel Eguia and Miss Philippines Water Marian Michelle Oblea attended the press conference of Earth Hour that took place at The Fort, Taguig, Metro Manila. The Philippines topped the Earth Hour 2009 participation as 647 cities and towns or over 15 million Filipinos were estimated to have participated according to the World Wildlife Fund, which sponsored the event and called on cities to dim nonessential lights from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. The Earth Hour was participated by nearly 4,000 cities and towns in 88 countries, an effort to call attention to climate change.
