Miss Earth Photo Campaigns
17 Nov 08 -- Since many of the national organizers are starting to select or accept applications for their next year's delegates, I think it is fitting to discuss about photo campaigns which I observe to be a very visible activity of the Miss Earth pageant community...
Upon determining one’s country’s representative to Miss Earth, organizers should immediately arrange to shoot for their delegate’s official photos for release to media. This is important for the national organizers to properly handle the image of their delegate.
Until the pageant season starts, the delegates’ palpability can only be taken from their photos and videos. Having the best photos can start to maximize the positioning of their delegate’s campaign. Based upon the second ranking of the Woman of the Earth on the pre-arrival of delegates (taking away Cuba who was replaced and Paraguay who did not show up), 11 of the 16 top favorites got into the actual Top 16 of the Miss Earth Finals.
Fans can be a very good source of campaigns. Remember fans are very eager to complete the collection of all the candidates for comparison and they would race to get the first photos. It would be very sad for a delegate for not having the “proper” photos as whatever photos available will be used to fill in the gap of the fans interests. Till then it may be too late.
I don’t think organizers are totally detached about pre-arrival popularity as this can also determine the delegates’ bankability which is very crucial to push the pageant’s causes.
Depicting sexiness of the delegate to grasp interest is a highly debatable topic. As different cultures have a different perception of sexiness; as a playful photo can be vulgar to another.

It really depends how the organizers would want to show the sexy aspect of their delegate which should be geared more or less to the general reception of the public.
I remember during the 2007 Miss Earth Pageant Season, Miss Venezuela Silvana Santaella was one of the top favorites for the crown and appears to be the most polished during the season then almost a week before the finals, her sexy photos appeared. Some of the fans were like splashed with cold water and begun to doubt her chances of winning. But soon after, it was learned that the photos taken was for another worthy cause related to animal skins. Silvana later won the Miss Earth Water.
Winning the coveted crown really takes a lot of strategy. Certainly, setting the best foot, rather photos, forward are something that shouldn’t be missed.
