Melinda Hefferman was crowned Miss Earth Australia 2009 last night, 19 September 2009 at the Roundhouse Theatre, University of New South Wales in Sydney. Melinda, 24, who stands 5'7" (170cm) ended up as victor among the group of 24 finalists fielded from 66 aspirants coming from different Australian States.
The new Miss Earth Australia is from Cremorne NSW Australia and grew up always with the love of water. "I feel strongly that we as human beings are all equal to fresh clean drinking water," according to Melinda. She further said that, "However, our precious eco-system and oceans are under constant threat from polluted stormwater. It is our actions through land filling and vegetation clearing that result in erosion and pollution to water catchments. We can all develop strategies to minimise the amount of “dirty water” entering our waterways. Simple measures from switching to environmentally friendly detergents and soaps to council initiatives for restoring creeks and preventing pollution. I would be honoured to encourage people to focus on cleaning our waterways so we can all enjoy our beautiful beaches and clean water for many years to come." The Miss Earth Australia official judging panel were made up of key sponsors, local personalities and celebrities including Sydney's own, Layne Beachley. Delegates were judged on beauty, poise, elegance and public speaking ability, with a focus on environmental issues and talent (such as singing a song, reciting a poem and dancing).
The winner of Miss Earth Australia 2009 will travel to the international pageant in the Philippines for three weeks to compete for the Miss Earth 2009 crown. This pageant is apparently watched by an international television audience of 70 million people. View her gallery:
