COUNTRY RANKING:>15 NATIONAL ORGANIZER:Miss Earth Australia Can you describe yourself, your background and the place where you are from? I currently reside in Sydney Australia and I grew up in a small country / coastal town in NSW. I spent a lot of time outdoors as a child and used my imagination instead of watching a lot of TV. I thank my parents for giving me a normal childhood and allowing me to use my creativity and individuality, which has followed me into adulthood. I love to write and would one day love to pen my own novel. I am constantly on the go, I love exercising outdoors and eating healthy (with the occasional chocolate J). I also love the Aussie beach lifestyle and hate what is happening to our coral reefs. I am a fairly curious person and the most random thing I have ever done was pack up my stuff and move to Magnetic Island for 3 months after I finished Uni. (I have a degree in marketing and communications). I lived in a small shack right on the beach and would wake up and swim in the ocean, go barefoot and wear virtually no makeup. It was so natural and fun and I loved every minute of it. I also met a lot of backpackers and really gained my independence. What are your preparations for the upcoming Miss Earth? I like to exercise outdoors and I do a boot camp 3 days a week at Coogee beach, gruelling but so rewarding. I have also been trying to cut back on the high sugar foods because I have a mean sweet tooth. I think just trying to relax is probably the hardest thing as there is a lot to do in the life of a beauty queen especially 2 weeks before I leave! I have been contacting sponsors and arranging outfits as well as tree planting and media interviews. Not to mention I am still working full time. In your daily life, how are you able to practice environmental awareness? This is an important question and I believe the most relevant, obviously you can do a lot of things daily to help lower you carbon footprint. It’s about being conscious and not lazy, don’t litter, recycle, use less water ( I have a 4 minute hour glass timer suctioned to my shower that I use each time so I only have 4 minute showers). I use the cold cycle when washing clothes, turn off the tap while I’m brushing my teeth, I drive less and give my time to community tree planting days. Technology, what's your take on this for the environment? Positive or Negative? Well technology doesn’t cause global warming it is the way it is used and the people who use it. Technology can solve a lot of the problems, however put in the wrong hands they can be catastrophic for example nuclear power plants and clean energy. I believe in innovation I always have pushed for that through my business studies I learned that companies need to adapt to change or they die. Instead we should embrace the new technology in solar power, wind farms, clean energies, renewable energies. The only way is forward and that requires forward thinking. How important is winning the Miss Earth crown to you? Why? It would mean the world for me and my country to win. I have so many ideas for promoting the pageant and environmental awareness. Until now I had never won anything before in my life and I feel I have already accomplished a great achievement by winning nationally. It’s fun, empowering and a little nerve racking to entertain the idea of winning Miss Earth and one can only hope. Do you think that Miss Earth has achieved its goal of spreading environmental awareness? Explain. I feel that promoting the environment is a never ending cause and therefore each year Miss Earth should aim to increase participation, activities and grow larger. I know that in Australia Miss Earth needs more participation, promotion and sponsorship to reach its full potential. We do spend a lot of time planting trees yet lack the required publicity for it. The Australian competition is very much focused on promoting the environment however it is hard because the media only want to focus on the beauty side. I intend to use my degree in marketing to develop a strategy to combine both elements in the next pageant and help promote the cause more. There are sectors that say, global climate change is a hoax. What is your opinion on this? Clearly it’s not, you can’t fake trees dying, species becoming extinct, or the smell of air pollution in built up metropolitan cities. I think people get scared and also selfish, they think the effects aren’t going to be felt for decades so why should they change their lifestyle now? It’s sad that we can put so much work into raising awareness and a few sceptics can come in and partially undo it. I find it frustrating, if nothing else we can all benefit from walking to work, driving less, lower air pollution, greener pastures etc. As for the polar ice caps melting that’s all the proof anyone needs and the stark reality of climate change. Any message to Woman of the Earth? Well first of all thank you for reading my interview. I love to be able to get my voice heard as much as the next person. I hope I can inspire you to take action against climate change and also follow me throughout the competition and beyond. I am so excited and can’t wait to get to the Philippines...Hugs and Kisses!
