KATHMANDU, Nepal. Three ladies walked off with the Miss Nepal 2009 crowns held under the shadow of Maoist threats during the Miss Nepal 2009 beauty pageant organized by The Hidden Treasure. The pageant was participated by  16 contestant all over Nepal.
 
Richa Thapa Magar was crowned Miss Nepal Earth 2009 (first runner-up of Miss Nepal 2009 pageant). The Nepal News reported that Magar will represent Nepal in the Miss Earth 2009 contest to be held in the Philippines in November of this year. 

According to Thaindian News, the nearly three-hour pageant, attended by four former Miss Nepals, and the new Nepal ambassador to India, Rukma Shumsher Rana. Rana is also the chairman of Dabur Nepal, the main sponsor of the pageant.
 
Two hours before the contest started, 11 Maoist organizations, which on Wednesday had warned they would put up a strong protest, held a half-hearted demonstration in front of the Tribhuvan Army Club where the venue had been shifted. Police said it was a symbolic protest with no violence. No one was arrested.
 
The 15-year-old pageant, which had in the past faced mild protests, could not be held last year after the Maoists came to power and waged war on it. As a result, Nepal failed to send its delegate to Miss Earth 2008.
 
However, since they had allowed dozens other similar contests to be held, their anger was seen to be actually directed against the Indian company that is the main sponsor of Miss Nepal, Dabur Nepal, the wholly owned subsidiary of Dabur India.
After the fall of the Maoist government this year, the Hidden Treasure, the event management company franchised to hold the contest, decided to go ahead with a low-key show.

Richa Thapa Magar is Miss Earth Nepal 2009

Richa Thapa Magar gained the right to represent Nepal upon placing 1st Runner up in the Hidden Treasure Miss Nepal 2009 Beauty Pageant held today at Kathmandu.

Richa is 23 years old, 5'4" tall and comes from Kathmandu. She has a BBA education.

This year's pageant where 16 delegates competed had a theme of empowering women for the betterment of country's development.

The 15-year-old Miss Nepal pageant had in the past faced mild protests and could not be held last year after the Maoists came to power and waged war on it.

Richa comes from an ethnic community that sends its sons every year to the British and Indian Army to serve in the Gorkha brigades.

A distinguished panel of judges comprising of eminent personalities selected this year's winners. The pageant was broadcasted live by NTV.
