Abuja, Nigeria. An Eboan beauty, Modesta Alozie from the State of Abia was crowned Miss Earth Nigeria 2009. She is currently a student at the Imo State University in Nigeria. Modesta will play an essential role in spreading awareness on various environmental issues in Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa. Modesta belongs to Igbo tribe, one of the three largest and most influential ethnic groups in Nigeria. She is expected to represent the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the ninth edition of Miss Earth 2009 beauty pageant together with the 90+ delegates from different countries, which will be held in the Island of Boracay in the Philippines. The Miss Earth winner serves as the spokesperson for the Miss Earth Foundation, the United Nations Environment Programme and other environmental organizations. In April 2009, Modesta participated in the first Miss Ikenga pageant, participated by Igbo-speaking states, organized by Ikenga Entertainment and Awards. Ikenga means a horned god of fortune and industry. She won one of the three titles, Miss Ihuoma, which is equivalent to first runner-up.
