BELGRADE, SERBIA. Dijana Milojković, from Cuprija, is set to be the green ambassadress of Serbia in Miss Earth 2009. When Dijana (also known as Diane) was a young girl, she aspired to participate in the most prestigious national pageant in her country, Miss Yu. The pageant is the national franchise holder in Serbia for Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss Earth, and Miss Europe beauty contests. “Even as a little girl, I dreamt of attending the Miss Yu pageant, but I needed to wait for some time to reach the minimum age in order to enter the pageant,” she comments. She was one of the 5 finalists in the Miss Yu 2009 pageant and later she was awarded the crown for Miss Earth Serbia 2009. During the Miss Yu pageant, she was adjudged to have the most beautiful face in the competition, where she received the most photogenic special award. The event, which took place in Belgrade on July 6, 2009, was attended by 27 gorgeous women and the jury included Serbian sports legend Vlade Divac and the national football team coach Radomir Antic. Dijana, 22 years old, acknowledges her enthusiasm to represent her country in one of the three most prestigious pageants in the world. She is jubilant that her accomplishment is much more than what she previously expected. Currently, she’s a pharmacy student; in the future, she wishes to establish a pharmaceutical company. She also has a desire to serve her motherland by entering the political arena in her country when time comes. She believes "physical beauty is an immense advantage at first glance, but in the long run, it fades. In contrast, beauty of spirit is something that makes each person attractive regardless of the time.” She describes herself as honest, outgoing, communicative, ambitious, confident, and funny. "I am very responsible and a reliable person." She also speaks the English language. “I love to play sports, I like to travel, and my hobby is dancing,” she exclaims. After the Miss Yu pageant, she became popular in Serbia, being the darling of the press and most favored by the audience to win the competition. Despite her status, her feet remained on the ground. “I’m happy that people recognize me, but I have to admit that my life has not drastically changed. I'm still the same person as before the pageant and I'm still surrounded by the people I love and who support me,“ she comments. When asked about the environmental issues involving her country, she narrates that “the environmental problems in Serbia have risen from the NATO bombings of 1999, which caused long-term harm to our environment; more than a few thousand tons of toxic chemicals piled up in factories that were targeted were released into the soil, atmosphere, and water basins, which definitely affected the Serbian people and the local wildlife.” Dijana also shares that “Recycling is still a fledgling activity in my country, with only 15% of our waste being turned back for re-use, despite the fact that the Ministry for Science and Environmental Protection is headed for improving the situation. There’s a need to further educate the people of Serbia to attain the desired result.” Presently, she’s intensively preparing for the Miss Earth beauty pageant and she is determined to be victorious in the pageant.
