BEAUTY with a mission. That’s how reigning Miss Earth Chanel Grantham describes herself and that is what she will represent when she flies the South African flag at the international version of the pageant in the Philippines later this year.

“What drew me to this competition is not the glamour but what it stands for.
“We do get our hands dirty. We go into communities and actively make a difference,” said the 20- year-old third year Bachelor of Science student at the University of Cape Town.

Born and bred in Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal, the strikingly beautiful Grantham says she would never consider entering Miss South Africa or any other pageant .

Can you describe yourself, your background and the place where you are from?

Adventurous is a word that springs to mind. Always ready to take on a challenge and make a difference.  I regard myself as being outgoing and friendly. My friends describe me as positive and compassionate.

Coming from the beautiful coastal city of Durban in South Africa, I love the outdoors. Our province (state) is also known as “The Kingdom of the Zulu”. We have the most incredible blue flag beaches, sunny blue skies and the BIG 5.

Being a qualified open water scuba diver, one of my all time favorite things to do is being one with nature in another world – it’s a feeling that’s indescribable! The beauty of the ocean is breathtaking!

Host to the FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup, South Africa is an amazing country alive with possibility!
