CAPE TOWN, South Africa. Chanel Grantham won the Miss Earth South Africa 2009 in June, presented by the Miss Earth South Africa Organization in association with Consol.  The pageant took place at a glamorous and green affair hosted at the Emperor’s Palace in Gauteng.

Chanel, originally from KwaZulu-Natal, is a University of Cape Town student studying Bachelor of Science in Property Management with a key focus on energy efficiency and sustainable development. She will be leaving at the end of October to represent South Africa at the international Miss Earth 2009 beauty pageant. The event will take place in the Island of Boracay in the Philippines, where 80-90 delegates from across the globe will compete.

According to Desi Tzoneva of “Public City,” Chanel has been involved with an enormous task, as she promotes environmental conservation and creates the much-needed awareness around global warming issues facing South Africa, as well as hands-on greening initiatives and projects, and educational workshops in schools across her country.

Chanel says, "Working with my national director, Catherine Constantinides and our Miss Earth Team on all the INCREDIBLE projects that we are currently involved with and meeting all the amazing people that we meet on a daily basis is awe-inspiring.  My life is richer for all these experiences.  As much as I impart of myself, I learn and grow with every experience every day."

"I can truly say that I love every minute of my reign and will continue to assure you of my greenest and best intentions always," she adds.

Recent projects have seen the Miss Earth South Africa working closely with SANCCOB in the Cape; with SANParks; and on several initiatives including recycling, tree planting, food gardens, educational programs, and an extensive greening project for International Day of Peace last September in Ekurhuleni with the Mayor’s office.

Chanel is featured in the September edition of South Africa Garden and Tuin Palies. She did a cover shoot with this popular green magazine at an exotic location.
