The 24 contestants in a beauty pageant for the carbon-conscious will be put through their paces at the University of NSW Roundhouse tomorrow night. They will be competing for the crown of Miss Earth Australia and a place at the Miss Earth finals in the Philippines. Last night the beauties competed in a pre-judging event at Sunny's Seafood Restaurant in Hurstville, where they paraded in gowns and bikinis before presenting their thoughts and solutions to environmental issues. On the judging panel tomorrow will be the surfer Layne Beachley but, sadly, no Peter Garrett, the environment minister who took part in a tree-planting event with contestants last month. The Diary is also not so sure about the environmental credentials of the stretch Hummer which has been ferrying the contestants around Sydney this week.
